What is Cellulite?

First, we need to clarify that we’re only talking about the skin condition called “cellulite,” and not the bacterial infection called “cellulitis”. Cellulitis occurs after bacteria enter your body through a lesion in the skin, which then infect the fat tissue and can become highly aggressive. It’s a serious infection that requires immediate medical attention.

The lymphatic system is a network that functions parallel to the circulatory system. These systems create and circulate lymph in the body. This fluid carries certain nutrients such as lipids (fat) and plays a key role in the immune system because it’s also made of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell.

Simply put, cellulite is a fat deposit created by hypertrophy (enlarged development) of fat cells, also known as “adipocytes”. These fat cells in particular swell and develop in certain areas of the body, which gives off the “orange peel syndrome” effect.

It’s worth noting that the apparition and aggravation of cellulite are vicious circle. In fact, when adipocytes grow irregularly, they start to compress the blood vessels and prevent lymphatic circulation, which keeps them from functioning correctly. In men, it’s mainly found in the upper body: around the hips, abdomen and in the arms, especially. In women, it can be found all over the body, but is mainly located in the hips and on the outsides of the thighs (saddlebags).

Fibrotic or “hard” cellulite

This type of cellulite is deep and compact. It’s hard to the touch and painful when pinched. It clearly shows the “orange peel syndrome” because the collagen fibers have hardened and have started to develop around the long-standing fat cells. This is the most difficult type of cellulite to treat and eliminate. Only a significant change in your everyday lifestyle will enable you to get rid of it over the long term.

Opt for a diet that’s low in saturated fat, salt and sugar and focus on eating more protein and fiber. This means that red meat, charcuterie, butter, cakes, cookies and crackers should be eaten in moderation.

Water is obviously what you should drink the most of because it’s the only drink your body needs. Preferably, you should eliminate sodas and fruit juices with added sugar. Some teas and herbal teas are known to help drainage and limit water retention. Try green tea, lemon tea and other plant-based herbal teas like fennel, thyme, artichoke or nettle.
